Flowers - Panoramas

An array of wild flowers in the saddle between the two tabletops.
Approximate Location N 37° 1.557'   W 119° 35.220'

When we finally reached the top of the table mountain we were treated to a flat, rocky expanse exploding with wild flowers. Walking was slow as we picked our way among the small "ankle-buster" rocks. But the effort was very much worth it. Every step revealed something interesting. Be sure to visit my McKenzie Flower Page for close-ups.

Vernal Pools form on the top of the table mountain when rainfall collects in shallow basins. The water can not percolate down through the basalt which means the pools will persist until evaporation takes its toll. I was amazed by this small ecosystem and the delicate plants surrounding the pools. It felt as if I were walking on a swampy meadow or bog as I navigated around the pools. Each step squished and the ground rebounded as my boot lifted up.

Yellow (and white) brick road. This looks like it is an old jeep trail now filled with wild flowers.

These red, low growing flowers facinated me.
